Legal proceedings have been launched by Argentina against 45 individuals and companies to enforce a crackdown on oil exploration around the Falkland Islands. The office of President Javier Milei announced the measures on Saturday morning via a post on X, coming a day after he pledged firmer action against businesses operating in the British overseas territory and reasserted his nation's territorial claim. According to the Argentinian government, legal actions could also target shareholders and service providers linked to firms involved in energy projects. Milei reiterated Argentina's claim over the archipelago in a national address, stating he would enforce sanctions on any energy companies operating in the area.
The renewed tension follows US President Donald Trump’s remarks indicating Washington would not assist the UK in a future conflict over the Falklands. In response, UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and Defence Secretary Wes Streeting reiterated Britain’s unwavering commitment to the Falkland Islands, citing the 2013 referendum where 99.8% of Falkland Islanders voted to remain British. The UK supports the Islanders' right to self-determination and economic development.
Milei also outlined plans to sign executive decrees targeting offshore oil production in the region, labeling the Sea Lion oilfield—a project involving British and Israeli firms—as a "clear and present danger." He warned that if no action is taken soon, the oil could be accessed before Argentina can act. UK-based exploration company Rockhopper stated it does not expect the measures to impact its initiative.
Milei additionally proposed establishing a new naval base in Tierra del Fuego to bolster Argentina’s defense. The UK declined to formally respond to Milei’s threats, preferring to strengthen diplomatic relations with Argentina. Meanwhile, the US’s stance on the Falklands remains unclear, with Trump’s remarks on lack of British support in his military campaigns in Iran cited as context.
