-REDPRESSWIRE- The MICHELIN Guide has announced its 2026 Key selection, with Viceroy Bali once again earning a place among the distinguished properties. The boutique retreat in Ubud has retained its One MICHELIN Key for a second consecutive year, following its initial recognition in October 2025 when Indonesia made its debut in the MICHELIN Key selection.
Indonesia’s presence in the MICHELIN Key awards has grown, with 47 properties now holding Keys, up from 33 in its first year. This places Indonesia second in Southeast Asia, following Thailand. Viceroy Bali remains among the select group of hotels to receive One MICHELIN Key, an honor determined by annual assessments based on five criteria: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, property personality and character, value for price, and the hotel’s contribution to its surrounding area.
A Boutique Retreat Above the Valley

Located on a ridge overlooking the Petanu gorge and the Valley of the Kings, Viceroy Bali features 40 private pool villas that follow the hillside’s natural contours. Each villa is equipped with a heated pool and unobstructed views of the valley, preserved by the private lease of the land below the ridge. The property has operated independently since 2005, with about 37 percent of its team members drawn from the neighboring village of Petulu. The traditional alang-alang thatched roofs are maintained by local craftsmen, underscoring the retreat’s connection to the surrounding community and landscape.
Dining Across Three Venues

Viceroy Bali offers three distinct dining experiences. Apéritif Restaurant features a menu guided by the philosophy “European Technique. Indonesian Soul.”, blending Indonesian ingredients and flavors with European culinary methods. The "Guided by the Lunar Cycle" tasting menu is available in five- and seven-course options, including vegetarian and vegan selections.
CasCades Restaurant & Bar presents Indonesian cuisine with views of the Valley of the Kings. Highlights include the Royal Balinese Rijsttafel, featuring nine traditional dishes, and a Balinese dance performance held on Monday evenings. In the evenings, Pinstripe Bar offers a 1930s-inspired setting with marble, dark wood, and bronze accents, providing guests with drinks and live jazz as the sun sets over Ubud.
Sustainability With Independent Verification
The MICHELIN Key recognition coincides with another milestone for Viceroy Bali. In June 2026, the property became one of the first hotels in Ubud to achieve GSTC Certification, following an assessment by Control Union, a GSTC-accredited certification body. The certification evaluates sustainable tourism practices across four areas: management, socioeconomic benefits, cultural heritage, and environmental responsibility.
Viceroy Bali’s sustainability initiatives include an 80-metre mountain spring providing drinkable tap water, an 18-step organic wastewater treatment system, solar energy use, an organic kitchen garden, and a policy eliminating single-use plastics. The retreat’s commitment to sustainability is further reflected in its workforce, with 37 percent of team members coming from the local Petulu community.
A Second Year With One MICHELIN Key

By retaining its MICHELIN Key in 2026, Viceroy Bali is among the Indonesian hotels recognized in both of the MICHELIN Guide’s first two Key selections. The retreat’s hillside location, private pool villas, dining venues highlighting Indonesian traditions, strong community ties, and independently verified sustainability efforts contribute to its continued recognition.
Situated a short drive from central Ubud, Viceroy Bali maintains a close connection to the surrounding valley, with the landscape playing a central role in the guest experience. More information about the boutique retreat is available at viceroybali.com.
